Types of Home Air Conditioner Systems

The first element to consider when looking for efficient air conditioning rental systems is the size of the room you want to cool. But if you plan to cool a larger area or whole house cooling, you’ll want to focus your search on AC units that best complement your square footage. Then, consider the type of rental air conditioner system, the area for installation and the budget you have in mind for the upfront payment and the additional costs.

Here are the different types of air conditioner systems out in the market :

  • Split-systems – This air conditioner type consists of a compressor unit installed outside (e.g. heat pump) and one or more indoor air outlets. These units are used to cool one or more rooms or an open plan area of up to 60 square meters.
  • Inverter System – Inverters can vary the compressor speed and maintain the set temperature within a narrow range. Generally more efficient and can cost less to run. Silent operations cost effective, quick operations for regulating heat, humidity and for home cooling.
  • Reverse System – These AC models won’t cost much more than conventional cooling only models and can be used for heating in winter. While the upfront and installation costs can be very high, reverse system air conditioner units are known to be the cheapest and most effective forms of heating or cooling for large areas. Producing less carbon dioxide compared to other types of electric heaters.
  • Wall/window – Installed on a wall or in a window, and efficient for cooling rooms and open-plan areas of 40-50 square metres. While smaller units can be wired into a normal power outlet, larger models may require additional wiring installations.
  • Installing the air – conditioning unit, Split-systems – are usually high wall models, the indoor unit is mounted high on a wall where the air flow can easily circulate across. There is also floor mounted split system models where the indoor unit is wall-mounted at floor level. While cassette models have the indoor units mounted in the ceiling or the floor.

For a more efficient home cooling system, it is best to choose models with just enough or greater capacity for the room, since :

  • Too powerful AC models for the room size may have frequent short cycles to operate at the target temperature. This could lead to inadequate dehumidification, increased overall power usage, and haste wear and tear of the system.
  • Models under-powered may have to run more often at maximum output, drying the air too much, over exhaust the system and reduce its expected lifespan.

We also have to consider other factors such as follows :

  • Each AC model follows a recommended outdoor temperature operating range. Common air conditioning systems are sufficient for most parts of warm regions, always check the air conditioner’s operating range before you decide, and see if it works best with the extreme weather conditions in your area.
  • Frost may build up on outdoor heat exchanger coils during the winter season if the air conditioner model has no automatic warming and you live in a cold region.
  • When living in areas with hot and dry climate, there are evaporating cooler systems known to be a cheaper alternative to an air conditioner system. Coolers are generally more suitable for areas with low humidity.
  • Noisy indoor units may disturb your home and is also a sign that the air conditioner is either overworking or the opposite. Local councils have established restrictions related to air conditioners noise. Be sure to check local regulations, especially if the outdoor unit needs are to be installed near a neighbors home.

Important Reminder

When renting new home air conditioning system, be sure to choose a product that uses refrigerants that do less damage to the environment. Air conditioner rental units often include warranties, make sure you’re covered under the warranty for any issues.
